State of Being: the
physiological and the psychological

One of the most important mental health issues to address in the future is anxiety disorders and depression. These have become increasingly prevalent, especially with the rapid changes in technology, economic instability, and global crises such as pandemics and climate change. Factors like social media, job insecurity, and environmental concerns contribute to heightened stress levels and anxiety or depression, affecting a broad range of age groups.

Addressing these mental health issues is crucial because it not only impacts our mental well-being but also physical health, productivity, and overall quality of life. Furthermore, early interventions can prevent more severe mental health conditions from developing. As awareness grows, incorporating solutions through policy, healthcare, urban design, and technology can create supportive environments that help mitigate the impact of anxiety and depression.

Let us first understand the physiological and psychological state of being

Arousal states refer to levels of physiological and psychological activation or alertness that an individual experiences. They can influence emotions, attention, and performance. Here are the main types of arousal states:

1. Low Arousal (Hypo arousal)

Characteristics: Low energy, fatigue, lethargy, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating.

Example States: Depression, burnout, or even dissociation in cases of trauma, freeze response.

2. Optimal Arousal

Characteristics: Balanced energy levels, alertness, focus, and productivity.

Example States: Flow state, moderate excitement, feeling engaged and motivated.

3. High Arousal (Hyperarousal)

Characteristics: Increased energy, agitation, restlessness, hypervigilance, anxiety, or stress.

Example States: Fight-or-flight responses, extreme excitement, or panic.

4. Extreme High Arousal (Hyperactivity or Distress)

Characteristics: Overwhelm, inability to focus, severe anxiety, panic, or manic states.

Example States: Panic attacks, hyperactivity disorders, manic episodes.

Understanding these states can be particularly useful in designing spaces for mental health or trauma-informed architecture, ensuring that environments support the regulation of arousal in individuals, especially those recovering from stress or trauma. Integrating principles like trauma-informed design and biophilia into spaces could be pivotal in creating environments that promote calm, comfort, and resilience, addressing anxiety from a design perspective.
