Our ancestors’ lifestyles, moods, and social structures evolved in harmony with landscapes and climates, shaping behaviors for survival.

The innate urge to connect with nature, groups, and the environment is the result of thousands of years of adaptation and evolutionary psychology.

Exposure to nature allows the brain and body to recover from stress and fatigue. Engaging in restful activities or simply letting the mind wander triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms stress responses, lowers heart rate, and supports mental restoration.

Unstructured time encourages creativity and enhances problem-solving abilities. When the mind is not strictly focused on tasks, it can form new associations, improve memory consolidation, and stimulate creative thinking—a principle supported by neuroscience and environmental psychology.

This also enhances connection with others, fostering social bonds and emotional support networks, which are central to overall happiness and mental health.

Ancient parks nurtured spiritual awe,

Medieval parks gave sanctuary and order,

Renaissance parks offered aesthetic pleasure,

19th-century parks enabled social reform and relief,

Modern parks foster mental health and inclusivity,

and

Future parks aim for therapeutic landscapes and resilient infrastructure.
